An evening with Falklands Veterans

After our 255 mile Falklands memory walk during the day, our participants and members of the community gathered for an evening talk with two Falkland War veterans, Dave Coomer and Guy “Tug” Wilson.

The evening was a mixture of emotions, from laughter as Tug walked up to the stage to the tune of “Always look on the bright side of life”. The mood then turned to tears as Tug explained the meaning of the song, as they sang it when fighting the fires on HMS Sheffield. At this point the room became very smoky and there were not many dry eyes in the room.

Following on from Tug was Dave Coomer, who talked about his experiences with PTSD. This was emotional beyond words and you could have heard a pin drop as the room fell silent.

The event concluded with the grand total of the three fundraising events. The first was the Falklands walk that took place earlier in the day where teams and individuals were sponsored.

The second was the Black Buck Challenge carried out by two local schools in memory of the Vulcan bombing mission. The third and final event was the money raised from the evening talk with the Falklands veterans. A grand total of £8280 was revealed to the assembled audience with the money to be used for both a cause established by a local Falklands veterans and also towards memorial benches to remember the conflict.
