A Falklands Pilgrimage

In our second Falklands conflict event, we once again had a presentation and talk from Dr Mark Baldwin on the Battle of the Atlantic and how the British-designed magnetron changed the future of the war.

We also invited local businessman Lyndon Whitehouse to talk about his upcoming visit to the Falkland Islands.

Lyndon had originally offered to lay a wreath on his visit to the islands, which gave Short Heath Lest We Forget the idea for another project. As part of his upcoming visit, Lyndon agreed to lay a series of crosses at battlefield and memorial sites across the Falkland Islands.

Valerie Pollard who cared for some of the injured from the war and also part in our previous Falklands walk knitted some miniature Falkland scarves and attached them to the crosses.

Local Falklands veterans were then, on the evening, presented with two crosses, one as a keepsake and the personalised with a message, which was taken by Lyndon to the Falklands and laid on their behalf.

Later in the evening, we announced where the money raised from our previous Falklands walk and fundraising event would be going.

We had raised almost £9,000 with the objective being to help fund our memorial benches and also to assist a charity focused on supporting Falklands veterans.

We were very pleased to give a cheque for £7,500 to Neil Binder, who is also a Falklands veteran, to help his charity, which is supporting those veterans in need.
